Geodesign Studio 2020

Geodesign : University Of Seoul 2020

The Korean government decided to develop 3,305.4 ha land 30km south from Seoul in 2001. Dongtan new town was planned as the southern hub of the Seoul metropolitan region based on high tech industry leaded by Samsung. The city has been developed in two phases (Dongtan 1, 2) targeting 0.4 million population by 2021. The project site is located at the boundary of Dongtan 1 and 2. The site is surrounded by natural resources such as mountains, wetlands, and the Osan river. Currently the site is vacant looking for new alternatives. Scenario A Scenario A assumes that the development of the site starts after the completion of Dongtan phase 2. Scenario A provides more housings and programs to the city while preparing strategies for the aging population. The urban resort for the new silver generation(60-69) and the complex providing high-end medical service with hotel residencies are proposed in the northern area of the site. Mixed used urban programs based on the modular structures will provide a more convenient environment for seniors. Scenario B Scenario B assumes that the development of the site pauses for 15 years. The delay in development provides an opportunity to improve the ecological quality of the city. The levy systems are partially deconstructed to recover the natural condition of the river. The development starting in 2035 will be focused on strategic area preserving a large number of lands. The traditional motor vehicle will be banned in the new development and alternative transportation system will be introduced. High-density development areas provide education programs associated with university and high-tech corporations
